Mr. Bullwinkel's Famous Whipped Cream Cake

For this holiday season, Piggly Wiggly will again be offering these famous Whipped Cream cakes at most Charleston and Columbia area stores. Just go to the Bakery to place your order. This confection is prized by South Carolina residents and is usually reserved for the most special occasion.
The late Mr. George Bullwinkel, a famous Charleston baker, was known for his whipped Cream cakes.  He made thousands of them through the years at his downtown bakery, and later at the Meeting Street Piggly Wiggly. Mr.

Bullwinkel, born in Charleston in 1912, grew up near his family business on Rutledge Avenue and Cannon Street. Bullwinkel and his brother, John, who ran the business with him from 1938 to 1974, added four satellite stores.
After the Bullwinkels closed their bakery in 1974 the late Marion Brabham, of the Meeting Street Piggly Wiggly, asked George to open a bakery inside his store. He agreed and began working three days a week allowing him to supply his customers with these popular cakes.
These cakes are from an old family recipe consisting of three 12-inch sponge layers and a generous portion of whipped cream and raspberries between each layer. It was not unusual for Mr. Bullwinkel to have more than 1,000 orders for the cake around the holidays. Sadly, he passed away on July 23, 1999.
